IGBC – AP Exam Advice and Study Guide

In June 2010, I passed the IGBC AP exam. As I was preparing for this course, I searched Internet to get advice, study material, and question papers and the result was…ZERO. Nothing is available on the net and most of the information was pertaining to Green Building exam of USA (LEED AP).

So, I decided to write about it to help the others who want to make a career in Green Buildings. This information will help you if you’re preparing for the IGBC AP test.

As this test is designed to test the knowledge of a candidate on green building design and construction, it is not compulsory to have any practical knowledge of green building construction & design and does not need to attend any institution to learn the syllabus. It only needs candidate’s interest on green building/energy efficiency /sustainable building construction & practices.

As I mentioned above, there is no third party or free references guides available for this exam. Only reference available at free of cost is abridged version of IGBC rating system and Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). These books will give you enough knowledge to get 50 to 70% of marks. As the minimum percentage of marks required to pass this exam is 80%(85 out of 110 questions), you have to read few more books.

My recommendations:

  • The best way to pass this exam is to buy a detailed reference guide priced at Rs. 1000.  Go to the IGBC – AP site for the address of CII and contact them through snail mail or by calling them on the telephone numbers mentioned to get the details about this book.
  • If you are from construction side, go through the Best Management Practices section in National Building Code India book.
  • Attend green building training programme conducted by IGBC. Check IGBC website to get details of training programmes.
  • Search internet for USGBC LEED reference guides which are available in some torrent sites (though it is illegal).
  • Download USGBC’s reference books from their website and go through them to get knowledge, which even helps you in green building designing and practicing.
  • Get the basic knowledge of ASHRAE standards.

Still have questions? Post in comments and I will answer them whenever I become free.  I am thinking to prepare few model questions, so that you can understand how the exam will look like.  Stay tuned!

      • Hi Qusroo,

I seriously studied two weeks for this exam along with my routine office work. I cleared IGBC exam in the first attempt. My suggestion is to Study only ‘Reference Guide- for NC and CS’ – 2011 Version and Go through the sample questions posted on this blog. This two things are more than sufficient to clear this Exam. If have any further queries contact me through this Email-ID ‘praveen.n24@gmail.com’

        All the Best.

        Regards,
        Praveen

  • I took the exam on 18th of May and cleared it with a score of 99.

This web-blog is a real help, the guidance provided is just perfect.

I suggest everyone, dont bother about mugging up the numbers, its more about the concept. The detailed reference Guide is the bible to clear the exam, and sincerely understand the sample questions provided in this blog.

Thanks a lot Bala and Kiran, you guys are doing a great deed.

  • Hi, I will be writing the igbc ap exam in the next few days.. I have prepared Leed nc, cs and igbc green homes. Is this enough.. I still dont feel that confident.. Also can somebody post the link to the mock test available on the same, i am not able to find it

  • Hi, i’m a recently graduated architect from New Delhi. My query is –

do we have to study IGBC green homes, factory, SEZ and commercial to appear in the exam? Or are there seperate exams for the above mentioned fields? Is their any concept like USGBC here where different exams are set for different sectors?

    • Its a single exam of 110 questions.. Its not divided based on the different standards. The basic idea/intent between all the standards is similar and henc the exam is based on your understanding of the overall concept

Study LEED NC Guide first.. abridged will do.. Then study IGBC Green Homes, here many credits will be similar to that of LEED NC.. Then Study IGBC Factories only highlighting the difference with green homes( such as modelling temparatures etc).. IGBC SEZ in particular was not asked for recent exams.

  • Hi Kiran,

I have completed my masters in construction management. What are the future aspects after getting IGBC-AP.

    • IGBC AP only tests your basic knowledge in Green Buildings. Taking this exam will help recruiters to understand your interest & knowledge in Green Buildings

  • helo kiran … I need a guidance regarding igbc exam.
i want to have information regarding “Background material of green building training programme conducted by IGBC.”

  • hello,

i am a mechanical engineer working in HVAC field for 4 years. how much can IGBC AP will be helpful for me in my career, does IGBC also conduct exams for BD+C ( building design + construction) as USGBC?

  • hello i am mechanical engg. and working in HVAC for more than 4 years , i am planning to give IGBC AP ASAP to build my confidence towards green building i have few question before i take this step
    1. how helpful would this course be in my career growth
    2. Do IGBC also holds BD+C (Building design + construction)as USGBC does

    Thanks.
    Ashish. C

    • IGBC AP only tests your basic knowledge in Green Buildings. Taking this exam will help recruiters to understand your interest & knowledge in Green Buildings. Carrier in Green building will be success, if you gets more practice in green building construction design and other things needed for green building certification.

  • Asish bhai IGBC AP PASS HONE SE KUCH NAHI>>>HOGA>>>INDIA ME SIRF IAS>>>IES>>>IFS>>>JEE>>>IIT>>> CHALTA>>>HAI…

Better do you preparation for LEED BD+C or O&M…

IGBC AP Exam is just a faltoo…kaun banega corepati exam..>!!!

IGBC is doing lot of money from this exam…no proper..resaons for correct answers…u will not know your answer is correct or no…..Sab chalta hain bhai…

    And all repeated questions…
The exam pattern should be changed…
Indians are not so dumm….what do IGBC think of themselves…
    It should become more competitive….

    • does IGBC holds BD+C or O&M

      • IGBC holds only AP..with no other specialization….Dilute mixture of all..its the cheapest cocktail available in the market…

u better visit their website check…go to USGBC website..and compare..the resources..events..publicity they are making…and the webinars..seminars which they are conducting..Public involvement in their initiative …IGBC should promote it…By upgrading the current exam pattern..make specialization..
Conduct webinars….bring the concept of green building to the common people..
It should launch a initiative like Green Apple ,Educate schools..colleges..by giving free seminars..

To make their vision successful “To enable a sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India to be one of the global leaders in sustainable built environment by 2025”

        This is their vision..
They should think outside the box ..to promote green in all parts of the country not only in METRO CITIES….

        Must have good public relations

    • The eligibility requirement for LEED BD+C is if we have experience working on a LEED-registered project within the past three years.

What if we don’t have this experience? Please guide

  • I have exam day after tomorrow. Kiran can u please provide me answers for the following doubts that I have and the supporting crowd on the blog, who all can help me-pls do.

Kindly provide the explanation also if posb as it will help in better understanding?

    1. If the CO2 level in ambient is measured to be 350 ppm, while inside the room it is 850 ppm, what will be the differential pressure?- Is it simply 850-350=500 ppm?

    2. Centrifugal AHU fan will operate at its best efficiency at rated value point?-a) At site condition b) at rated pressure c) at pressure lower than rated d) at pressure higher than rated. Or it can be any other option too

    3. Reporting coefficient of chiller is as per which standard?- CTI/ BEE/ ISHRAE/ ARI

    4. Man made swales are to the strategy to control soil erosion or storm water run off?

    5. Shading coefficient of of glass in tropical climate region should be? high/low/ optimal/ neither too high nor too low?

    6. Embodied energy of virgin steel compared to recycled steel?- higher/ lower / equal.

    7. Preferred location for CO2 sensors in the room of high occupancy and also of low occupancy?

I have other doubts too which I will probably list down in few hours. Pls reply ASAP.
